"There are many groups promoting recreational cycling,
however there are relatively few voices for functional cycling."

A little comic relief from Not Just Bikes

Stupid Parking Laws.jpg

INSANITY

I got a new truck!! (and a million subscribers).

It's estimated there are over billion parking spaces, most of which never get used.

75% of Americans drive to work

"Over two-thirds of ALL traffic is from local residents commuting to and from work. Nearly half of all trips are three miles or less and 28 percent are one mile or less – distances easily covered by bicycle." Yet 65 percent of trips under one mile are made by automobile.

BIKE SATURDAYS mission is to change the world by getting more people out of their cars on bikes. However, the lack of efficient transportation alternatives to driving and a fear of biking in heavy traffic only encouraged people to continue to drive all, or most of the time.  BIKE SATURDAYS addresses these issues -- and MORE!  Source: U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

"Partner With Us"

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION

BIKE SATURDAYS is an ongoing, year-round promotion. It integrates health-enhancing choices into transportation policy that has the potential to save lives by reducing and preventing bicycle-motor-vehicle-related injury and deaths, improving environmental health while stimulating economic development, and ensuring access for everyone by removing the FEAR FACTOR of biking on city streets.  Any community, school, or business can incorporate the concept into an existing marketing program to help promote bike safety, health and fitness, and bicycle infrastructure. AND WE CAN HELP!

BIKE SATURDAYS consists of three parts -- here are the talking points

PART I: Saturday Ride Events

  • The SATURDAY RIDES are not races or any other form of competition.

  • The purpose is to familiarize cyclists with the local paved and off-road trail systems, trail etiquette and safety

  • The target audiences are families and individuals who own bikes but rarely ride them and are part of the majority who feel it's unsafe to ride city streets. However, everyone, all abilities, and ages can participate.

  • A new road and mountain bike trail is designated each week.

  • Events provide a platform for county and city planning officials, law enforcement, and other agencies to get the word out about the importance of bicycle infrastructure and the many other benefits of commuting by bicycle.

  • Any city, large or small can promote a BIKE SATURDAYS ride event.

  • Great community fundraising concept.

HOST LOCATION SPONSOR

  • Any business can sponsor a Saturday Ride Event

  • NO fees to sponsor or to participants

  • Sponsors can do whatever they want to promote and market their event. EX:

    • BBQ's

    • Live music

    • Costumes

    • Product demos

    • Provide incentives (awards, gifts, drawings etc.)

    • Bring in other businesses to help co-sponsor

PART II: Bike-to-Work Incentives

  • All businesses can participate.

  • Any day an employee bikes or walks to work (school) points are awarded

  • Points are converted to awards, prizes, and other incentives. Points are tabulated monthly. Participants must sign-up via STRAVA

    • Bike 15 points (doubled during the winter months)

    • Walk 10 points (doubled during the winter months)

    • Public Transportation 5 points

    • Double points when participating in a BIKE SATURDAYS event.

PART III: Merchant Incentive Promotion

Encourages residents and visitors to travel by bike and to patronize local businesses. Participating businesses place a special BIKE SATURDAYS decal in their storefront letting customers know they are participating in the program and are offering discounts.

  • No fees to participate

  • Decals provided

  • Discounts and other incentives at the discretion of the merchant
