Biking Means Business
More than 140 million Americans make biking part of their daily lives. Bicycling in the United States alone is a $6 billion a year industry and one study estimates that the spillover effects of recreational bicycling could be as large as $133 billion!
But that’s just the beginning, barely scratching the surface of the environmental and economic impact of transportation bicycling in communities across North America -- while saving billions of pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, countless lives and billions in mortality and health care costs every year!

Bicycling Could Help Save The Planet
Forbes October 8, 2018
Traffic Congestion is the #1 Source of Stress, Anger, Anxiety, and Pollution
75% of Americans drive to work.
"Over two-thirds of ALL traffic is from local residents commuting to and from work. Nearly half of all trips are three miles or less and 28 percent are one mile or less – distances easily covered by bicycle." Yet 65 percent of trips under one mile are made by automobile.
The positive impact of making cities more bike-friendly
64% of all Americans are seriously overweight or obese. The average American child spends five to eight hours a day in front of a digital screen, and half the time their parents did playing outside.
However, the lack of efficient transportation alternatives to driving and a fear of biking in heavy traffic only encouraged people to continue to drive all or most of the time. BIKE SATURDAYS addresses these issues -- and MORE! Source: U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

BIKE SATURDAYS is not a one-time event, but an ongoing, year-round promotion. It integrates health-enhancing choices into transportation policy that has the potential to save lives by reducing and preventing bicycle-motor-vehicle-related injury and deaths, improving environmental health while stimulating economic development, and ensuring access for everyone by removing the FEAR FACTOR of biking on city streets. Any community, school, or business can incorporate the concept into an existing marketing program to help promote bike safety, health and fitness, and bicycle infrastructure. AND WE CAN HELP!
BIKE SATURDAYS consists of three parts -- here are the talking points
PART I: Saturday Ride Events
-
The SATURDAY RIDES are not races or any other form of competition
-
The purpose is to familiarize cyclists with the local paved and off-road trail systems, trail etiquette and safety

Events provide a platform for county and city planning officials, law enforcement, and other agencies to get the word out about the importance of bicycle infrastructure and the many other benefits of commuting by bicycle.
